The Champions Online MMORPG

Champions Online is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, or MMORPG. It was published by Atari in 2009 as a competitor to the City of Heroes game franchise and has been a success. There are 8 free character archetypes and 6 paid character archetypes, with more said to be on the way in the future. Nemesis characters are available at 25th level. That was the case at first, but these days, you can play online without having to subscribe.

When you play Champions Online for free, you only have slots for two player characters. Also, there will be some features and some parts of the game you might not be able to access without paying for the upgrade. The idea of the designers is to get you hooked and convince you to pay for an enhanced version of the game, but these are voluntary options and do not get in the way of you playing or beating the game.

Cryptic Studios and Champions RPG

Champions Online was designed by Cryptic Studios, which also designed City of Heroes. Gamers who have played each are going to notice a lot of similarities from one to the other, which (given the popularity of CoH) is a probably a good thing for most online gamers. Champions Online does have updated graphics and a more authentic-feeling comic book setting. Game play is faster and less tactical in nature, which may or may not suit your game needs. Personally, I like the change.

The setting is based on the Champions RPG, so that's a big advantage over City of Heroes. You get to travel to places like Millennium City, Vibora Bay, Stronghold, and Monster Island. You get to battle all the classic villains, organizations, and alien races of the Champions setting. So for anyone who has played in Champions campaigns over the years is going to get a big kick out of all of that.
